Creating a Modern Learning Oasis: The Junghwa Middle School Case Study

For decades, the golden rule of school libraries was silence. But as educational philosophies evolve, so too must the spaces where students gather. The traditional, pin-drop quiet library is increasingly being replaced by dynamic, multi-purpose learning hubs. However, this shift presents a significant acoustic challenge. How do you balance the energy of a collaborative cafe-style environment with the need for individual focus?

Our recent work at Junghwa Middle School in Seoul, South Korea, provides a perfect blueprint for solving this modern architectural dilemma.

From stagnant to stimulating

The administration at Junghwa Middle School recognized that a strictly silent library was unappealing to a generation of students used to collaborative environments. They envisioned a space that felt more like a modern cafe. A place where students felt comfortable interacting and working together.

The problem? In an open-plan library, even small sounds—a whispered conversation, a chair dragging, or a dropped pen—become highly intrusive in the quiet environment. Without a consistent level of background sound, these noise spikes become distracting. This made it impossible for students to concentrate on their own reading or study.

Soundmask’s solution

To bridge the gap between a vibrant atmosphere and a functional study space, Soundmask was engaged to install a system tailored for the school’s open-plan library.

Our system works by adding a gentle, unobtrusive background sound. At Junghwa, the goal wasn’t to quiet the students. It was to raise the ambient floor level so that conversations and activity noise were masked.

By installing the system in the open area, we were able to create an even wash of sound across the library and adjacent classrooms. This effectively:

  • Reduced Distractions: The intelligibility of distant conversations was lowered, allowing students to focus on their own tasks.
  • Enhanced Privacy: Students felt more comfortable discussing projects, knowing their voices wouldn’t carry across the entire hall.
  • Improved Comfort: The silence was replaced with a comfortable sound that mimics the air-conditioning.

Why it works for education

Today, the library at Junghwa is no longer just a room full of books. It is a thriving, comfortable hub where the cafe vibe and academic focus coexist in perfect harmony.
