The peace and tranquility usually associated with yoga studios includes incense, sound bowls, lotus flowers, pictures of Buddha, and Gen X men who’ve renamed themselves in Sanskrit. It doesn’t ordinarily bring to mind sound masking. But when our client opened their yoga studio adjacent to a multiple noisy neighbours, even the chakras indicated something had to give.
The problem
Western Wellness is a modern and contemporary yoga studio. It runs multiple classes in its sanctuary of tranquillity, serenity and rejuvenation. These include yoga practise and meditation, which necessitates quiet. The owners approached us mainly for noise intruding from the floor above from the gym. There was also low frequency noise from the adjoining freeway and freight trains. It was a key consideration that any introduced masking sound would not intrude or distract from the meditative environment.
The solution
The space itself was a standard office fit out with carpeted floors and pop in tile ceiling. We supplied transducers and our (now discontinued) shelf generator. This introduced a sound similar to airflow that did not intrude, fading into the background to maintain quiet. This allowed the instructors and students to teach and practise yoga and meditation without intrusive or distracting noise. When the studio expanded, the owners were able to easily add transducers to the existing system.
Sidenote
Next time this yoga studio upgrades the system to include our Soundmask GQ, they will be able to use the traffic noise preset. This will more perfectly mask the low frequency noise from those freight trains and trucks going by.
